HED student looking for more resources on trends in graduate theological education.

Hi Lindsey!

I hope that you are well! I am emailing to ask for help in finding references for my dissertation. Currently, in order to build my argument in Chapter 1, I am looking to identify key sources that describe the current challenges/shifts/disruptions in graduate theological school education. (Some of these include Denominational shifts, Decreasing church attendance, Digital Revolution, New Models for Credentialing, etc.) I am looking to find the "big buckets" of these current challenges/shifts/disruptions in seminary education. I have found some material in ATS journals, however, I need more robust sources.

Thank you for your help on this -
Amy

Have you done any searching in the ATLA Religion Database yet? Since you are focusing on graduate theological programs I would recommend beginning your search there instead of in Academic Search Premier. ATLA is the "go to" database for all things theology related. You can find it alphabetically in the database A-Z list or by going to the Theology, Religion, Philosophy category of the subject dropdown menu when you click on the "Articles and Databases" tab of the search box on the library homepage.

Just a few general suggestions to start with. You may have found already that the term seminary is generally used to refer officially to graduate theological schools in most databases, so when searching the databases you will want to make sure you include this as one of your keywords. In the case of ATLA, the official subject heading is "Theological seminaries." So if you enter this into one of your search boxes and change the field from "Select Field" to "Subjects" (see screenshot below), you will ensure that you are pulling articles related to this area. You can then add other keywords (such as "trends" etc.) to the text boxes below that to start limiting and refining your search.

There are actually many helpful subject headings for seminaries that you can sort through for additional terminology. One subject heading that I would recommend starting with is "Theological seminaries -- Enrollment". There has been a marked decline in seminary attendance, and the articles found here may help provide some insight into some of the reasons why this is/has been occurring.

To see a list of the official subject headings in this area, click on "Thesaurus" in the top menu when in ATLA and fill our the field as noted in the screen shot below. You will be able to browse through all of the listings by using the Previous and Next links to look through more pages.

I think these subjects in ATLA will help you find more resources covering your topic. Start with this and if you still aren't finding what you're looking for, let me know!
