I am having trouble viewing PDFs in EBSCOhost and ProQuest Databases.

I'm using Google Chrome, and the PDFs won't open in my browser.

Note: this information addresses a technical problem encountered when using Google Chrome. If you need help locating full text articles, please see the "How to Request Books and Articles" LibGuide, as well as the "Finding Full Text Articles" video.

I contacted EBSCOhost technical support, and it turns out that Google Chrome uses its own special PDF viewer plugin that is incompatible with many of our databases.

This appears to be a problem only with Google Chrome; embedded PDFs in the library's databases will work with the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers.

However, you can get around this problem by disabling the Chrome PDF viewer and enabling the Adobe viewer. To do that:

  1. Type chrome://plugins/ into the location bar within Chrome.
  2. Scroll down to the "Chrome PDF Viewer" section and click "Disable."
  3. Scroll up to the "Adobe Reader" section and click "Enable."

After following those steps, you should be able to view PDFs within library databases--without even having to restart your browser!

For more information about the Chrome PDF viewer plugin, see the links below.
